COAL

Three coal burning plants are investigated in the project: Tirana, Korca and Maliq. All have been shut down.

The CBPP at Tirana has been operating from 1951 till 1993. It was closed down definitely in 1995. It is situated in the suburb “Kombinati I Tekstileve” near Tirana. There are 2 waste dumps on the site of the former plant. The area is unfenced and 20 000 inhabitants live in a radius of 5 km from the CBPP.
The CBPP was using coal from the Titan-Durres coal basin.

The CBPP near the town of Korca (50 000 inhabitants) got in operation in 1972 and worked for about 22 years without interruption. It has been operating with interruptions from 1994 on and was finally closed in 2000. The generated ash was transported, deposited and covered with clay in the outskirt of the town of Korca. On the site of the former plant are 2 waste dumping sites.
The Korca CBPP was burning coal from the Pogradec and the Korce basin.

The CBPP of Maliq is situated in the outskirts of the town and it operated in a continuous way from its start in 1951 till 1993. From then on it has been in operation with interruptions and was shut down definitely in 1997. There is one huge waste dumping site with a surface of 110 000 m?.
The Maliq CBPP has been burning coal from the Pogradec and the Korce basin.

The coal reserves of Albania are located in four major basins:

- the Basin of Tirana-Durres, accounting for 613 Mt, with an average caloric value of 13,1 MJ/kg
- the Basin Pogradec, accounting for 33 Mt, with an average caloric value of 13 MJ/kg
- the Basin Memaliaj, accounting for 30 Mt, with a caloric value of 20,5 MJ/kg
- the Basin Korce-Ersek, accounting for 32 Mt, with a caloric value of 11,7 MJ/kg.

Most coal resources are brown coal or lignite of poor quality. The ash content is 38-62% and the sulfur content is between 3.1 and 3.8%. The uranium content averages from 0.005% to 0.03%.

Aluminum Industry

The project investigates two plants: the Elbasan and Burreli Ferro-Chromium plants (EFCP and BFCP), that use bauxite as an additive and are known as aluminium smelters.

The Elbasan Ferro-Chromium plant is in operation since 1976. Bauxite was used in the technological process to make the smelter viscous. The waste is stored on a deposit of about 3 ha. The total stored volume is currently 200 000 m?.
The scoria were deposited on a surface over 3 ha, with an approximate volume of 200 000 m3.

The Burreli Ferro-Chromium plant started in 1978. Bauxite was used in the technological process to make the smelter viscose. There are 2 dumps. The scoria were deposited on a surface over 1.5 ha, with an approximate volume 130 000-150 000 m3, approximately 300 000 ton. The production residues were used in building industry and in road construction.

Bauxite is mined in Dardhe, Prozhme, Tamare and Villgar.
