The project activities focus on several case-studies of tailings and waste disposal sites of coal burning power plants (CBPP) and alumina plants, in five western Balkan countries. In order to better understand the underlying processes of radionuclide enrichment/depletion, leaching mechanisms and ecological impacts of hazardous radioactive substances related to burned coal and alumina processing, three specific case studies outside the western Balkan are included in the project.

This section provides an overview of the targeted test sites and their regional context. Besides the plant characteristics and ash/slag production, it describes the size, volume and peculiarities of the tailing ponds. Knowledge on these characteristics is used as a base to specify the experimental activities to be performed in the scope of the project.
